Obituary:
Robert Fabbricatore
December 14, 1944 — December 3, 2024
Altamonte Springs

Robert Lee Fabbricatore, aged 79 of Altamonte Springs, Florida, passed away on December 3, 2024. Mr. Fabbricatore, known as “Fab” or Bob to friends was born and raised in Ithaca, New York. He was the son of the late Francis and Catherine Stockwell Fabbricatore who met as Cornell students and stayed in Ithaca after graduation, and brother of the late John Fabbricatore. His father came to Cornell from Brooklyn and his mother was from Oneida, New York. At some point, Fab referred to this as “Vito Corleone met Mary Poppins.” He graduated from Ithaca High School and Cornell University. At Ithaca High School, Fab played baseball, football and basketball. He was the shortstop on the championship teams of 1960, 1961, and 1962 and was named the All STC shortstop his Junior and Senior years and was selected to represent Section IV in the statewide All Star game in Cooperstown in 1962. He was a defensive back on the football team and second string tailback on offense behind Mel Robinson which he equated to being second string behind Lou Gehrig.

Fab went on to Cornell University, first in the pre veterinary program before transferring over to the College of Arts and Sciences and receiving a B.A. in Government. This decision came when he got crushed on a Chemistry exam which “shook his confidence.” Thirty years later at a Cornell Alumni reunion he found out that EVERYBODY flunked the exam. He played shortstop and second base at Cornell and also played shortstop for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 1966. He was a member of Sigma Nu (Gamma Theta Chapter).

Any hopes of playing professional baseball were dashed when Fab got drafted by the United States Army which superseded being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and he entered the Army in July 1968. He did Basic Training at Fort Dix, NJ and qualified as an expert on the M-16 automatic rifle and M-14 rifle and later somehow got a badge for being an expert with the M-79 grenade launcher. He served with the 14th Combat Engineer Battalion mainly on Fire Base Nancy in Viet Nam from May 1969 until April 8th, 1970 . He received the Bronze Star , Viet Nam Service, Good Conduct and National Defense Medals along with a Republic of Viet Nam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge. Fab always thought getting the Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal simultaneously rather humorous but learned not to argue with military logic. He was most proud that the Commanding Officer gave him the title of “Chief Thief” for his ability procure ammunition, vehicles and supplies including liquid refreshments outside of normal channels. President Lincoln once said his Secretary of War was “so crooked that he would steal everything but a hot stove.” Fab stole a pizza oven in Danang and took it back to Firebase Nancy.

After getting out of the Army, he went to work for New York State Government in Albany working in three different state agencies over 33 years. In his last job for the Division for Youth (Juvenile Justice), Bob spent three days a week in New York City (and three nights a week at Meadowlands Race Track) on the State’s dime remarking, “They pay me to do this?” He also did some contract work for the Federal Government.

No longer able to play competitive team sports, Bob turned his attention to thoroughbred horseracing and soon moved out of Albany to Saratoga County to be closer to the Saratoga Race Track. Upon retirement from New York State Government in December 2002, Bob moved to Altamonte Springs, Florida. He was tricked into becoming the President of the Montgomery Woods Condominium Association in 2007 and found out he was President for Life as nobody else was dumb enough to take over. He maintained his interest in horseracing and qualified to compete in the National Horseracing Championship in Las Vegas in January 2022.

He is survived by his daughter Shawn Loucks of Longwood, Florida; Nephews John S. Fabbricatore, Jr. of Augusta, Maine and Vincent T. Fabbricatore of Buckhannon, WV and niece Maria Andrews of Buckhannon, WV. Bob will be returned to his place of birth, Ithaca, NY and laid to rest with his parents and grandparents.

Final arrangements will be handled by Bangs Funeral Home, Ithaca NY

Loxie Priscilla Hill (Oltz)

Birth Date: 1944-07-13
Graduation year: 1962
Deceased Date: 2024-10-29
Obituary:
Loxie Priscilla (Oltz) Hilll Obituary
Loxie Priscilla (Oltz) Hill, 80 of Danby passed away on October 29 after a relentless battle with kidney disease. Born in Ithaca on July 13, 1944, Loxie was the daughter of the late Leon A. and Elosia Oltz.

She was a 1962 graduate of Ithaca high school and a graduate of Ithaca school of Practical Nursing. She met her beloved husband, Clifford Hill at a church function and they were married in 1964. Together with partners they founded many local businesses, with Loxie always playing a key role as bookkeeper. Among them were Hillview Terrace Mobile Court, Power Town Garage and Genoa Off-Road Speedway, all in the Ithaca area. They were also founding and active members of the Ridge Toppers 4 x 4 Jeep club.

She is survived by her beloved children, Priscilla I Hill and Keith M Hill (Suzanne), brothers Melford Oltz (Peg) and Hollis Oltz, step-sisters Janet Miller (Howard) and Fran Enders, sister Beth Wilcox (Scott), as well as grandchildren Bradley Barnes, Amanda Barnes, and Mitchell Hill, great grandchildren Janaya, Jordan, Bria, Creed, and Brinley, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, parents, brother Fred Oltz, stepmother Bette Oltz, and stepbrother Vernon Underwood.

During periods not working along-side Clifford, she kept herself busy helping others. She was a caregiver to many young children, and she worked several years at the Big M market in Spencer, followed by her final career at Ithaca city school district as a bus aid.

Although she did not formally practice nursing, her love of the medical field and her skills were used daily. This was evident in her care for her family and others throughout her life, as well as in her final fight with kidney disease, turning a bleak 6-month diagnosis into 4.5 fruitful years. In her retirement, she enjoyed baking cookies for her friends and family and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as multiple special pets.

Funeral will be held at the Danby Community Church on Tuesday, November 5 with Calling hours 9am- 10am, service 10am-11am, burial 11am-12pm, and reception at 12pm.

John Gordon Novarr

Birth Date: 1944-10-24
Graduation year: 1962
Deceased Date: 2024-09-16
Obituary:
John Gordon Novarr, age 79, died at home on September 16, 2024. He was born on October 24, 1944, in Hartford, CT to Ruth Gordon Novarr and David Novarr. His family moved to Ithaca shortly before he turned two years old. Other than his college years, and a two-year stint in the army, he lived in Ithaca his entire life.

John was a troublemaker from the start. His exasperated mother, Gordy, would take complaints from their neighbors in Belle Sherman about John’s most recent misdeeds. Whether throwing baseballs through windows or getting into fistfights, David and Gordy’s hopes for a proper home were disrupted. He had great difficulty paying attention to subjects that didn’t interest him and enjoyed illustrating this point with stories of his 9-year college experience. He flunked out twice from the University of Vermont, failed numerous courses at Cornell, was kicked out of VISTA, and finally entered the army, spending time in Vietnam. After his discharge from the army, the University of Vermont admitted him for the “third and final time.” He did well. At this point he met Pat Wilmott in the library, and they married in August 1970. Their daughter, Jennifer, was born in December 1971, during John’s period of final presentations and exams.

In the new year, the family moved back to Ithaca where John had previously supported himself by painting houses. After serving in the army, John avowed never to work for anyone else again, and he was true to his word. He began landscaping with John Costello, then house painting, moving to construction with Paul Mackesey as a partner in Novarr-Mackesey Construction, and later had a millwork shop. His mentor, Stan Goldberg (Uncle Stanley), provided invaluable advice and friendship throughout his career. While growing his business, he rented two apartments in his home on Eddy Street in Collegetown. This began the final iteration of his professional life. He became a developer of student apartments. His goal was to improve the housing both functionally and aesthetically. The project that he was most proud of was Collegetown Terrace. It took years of planning and meetings in city hall before the actual buildout. This simply would not have happened without John’s knack for connecting with people and forming long-standing working partnerships filled with mutual respect for the unique contributions of each party. He enjoyed collaborating with his friends, whether they worked on the jobsite, designed buildings and landscapes, or worked in the property management office. It was important to John to be part of improving Ithaca’s built environment for the future.

John was a very gregarious guy. He loved having people over. He and Pat, who shared a love of cuisine, worked as a team in the kitchen. In the early years of their marriage, Pat learned to always prepare dinner for more than just the three of them since John would invariably show up with friends. In the last several decades John would host friends, usually on a Friday, and undercook meat on his Big Green Egg. Friends would fill in with sides, cheeses, and bread. And, of course, enjoy wine from his collection. He so looked forward to these moments.

As a child, John was not allowed to have pets. In the spring of 1970, after discovering an ad placed by Ian Tyndall, John and Pat brought home the first of six Newfoundlands--Jonah, Izzie, Pete, Pancho, Jake, and Lola. Ian, a landscape architect, would become a friend for life. Henry, the Clumber Spaniel, was in the mix, but given the slightest opening John went back to Newfs. John loved his dogs, and they loved him. Unfortunately for Pat he was not enthusiastic about training. As with the rest of his life, he did not want any restrictions placed on him.

John had opinions and felt compelled to share them. He gave a lecture every year in the Real Estate Program at Cornell. He was open to helping on projects or just discussing issues the student or local resident might have. He would chuckle when parents who were aware of his checkered educational history would call and ask him to speak to their child and give advice as to how he got where he was. He never had a 5- or 10-year plan, just an attempt to keep improving his life.

John loved art. His minor in college was art (his major was ancient history), although he couldn’t draw to save his soul. When studying in Cornell’s School of Art, Architecture and Planning, he took a course that required some drawing. His professor finally told him to trace something from the text in lieu of drawing. His aesthetic interests extended to Italian glass and Persian rugs. John and Pat bought their first piece of glass in an antique shop in London in the 1980’s, and John continued to search wherever he travelled. He enjoyed going to auctions in New Hampshire with Mike and Sue Wilmott, Pat’s brother and sister-in-law.

John was an incredibly generous person, sharing his time, advice, housing, food, and personal belongings. Friends would come and stay for days and even years. When Bosnian refugee students came to Cornell, John gave them a place to live. When students were forced out of their apartments because of fire, he housed them. There would always be extra food at his house, and when the Jewish grandmother in John appeared, he pushed food on whomever happened to stop by. He loved to talk to people: at home, at parties, at events, on the street, out to dinner, in restaurants, in bars, on the telephone. He just loved to interact with people. John relished telling jokes over and over. He favored puns of the dirty and offensive variety. Every conversation would remind him of a joke. He became increasingly giddy as he approached the punchline, barely able to contain his delight at the prospect of watching his audience’s reaction.

John leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Pat Novarr; his daughter, Jen Novarr; son-in-law, Walter Silbert; his sister, Frances Strayer; and his grandchildren, Ben, Izzy, and Lala (Ursula), whom he adored. John also leaves behind, or in some cases is predeceased by, many friends whom he cherished and with whom he shared many experiences, including the growing pains that occur from time to time when people with big personalities and emotions engage in debate.

Please join us in celebrating and remembering John at a memorial service on Saturday, November 9, from to 2 to 5 p.m. at Coltivare (235 South Cayuga Street, Ithaca).

Obituary
Darlene Lynch Klein, 79, a devoted wife and mother known for her sense of humor, loyalty to friends and family, and exacting opinions, died unexpectedly at home in Ithaca on Oct. 21, 2023.

Darlene was born June 22, 1944 in Niagara Falls, NY, to William (Bill) H. Lynch and Jean Lynch Branigan. The oldest of Bill and Jean’s six children, Darlene grew up in Ithaca and graduated from Ithaca High School in 1962. After attending Missouri Valley College and the University of Vermont, Darlene returned to Ithaca and fell in love with Cornell architecture student David L. Klein. They married in 1969.

Shortly after marrying, Darlene and David acquired their first Afghan hound which started a lifelong hobby of showing and breeding show dogs. A lifetime member of the Finger Lakes Kennel Club, she showed Afghans and later greyhounds, winning Best of Breed with her greyhound at Westminster in 2007.

Darlene enjoyed many activities and passions. She put her knack for sewing and beading to good use as the designer of figure skating costumes for her daughter, and as a costumer for several plays at Elmira College. She loved genealogy, thoroughly researching both sides of her family tree and often excitedly sharing the interesting family history she discovered. She could read a book a day, and generously shared her Barnes and Noble collection with friends. And she volunteered extensively.

Over the years, Darlene had been a highly successful fundraiser for Lakeview Cemetery, an advisory board member of the Cornell Baker Institute, newsletter editor for the Greyhound Club of America, show chair of the Salt City Dog Shows in Syracuse, and co-
chair of the Class of 1962 reunion committee.

But her greatest passion in life was being mom to Bridget and Casey and grandma to Caroline and Katherine. Darlene spent many hours on the road traveling to her kids’ figure skating competitions, dance competitions, ski races, and hockey games, and in more recent years, doting on her granddaughters and proudly keeping up with their many activities from volleyball and dance to flute and piano.

Her parents predeceased her, as did her sisters Teri-Anne Nindl and Betsey Napier, brother William (Bill) H. Lynch II and infant brother Jeffrey Lynch. She is survived by her husband David, Ithaca; her daughter Bridget (Tim) Curry, Stamford, CT; son Casey Klein, Washington, DC; granddaughters Caroline Curry and Katherine Curry, Stamford, CT; brother Timothy Lynch, Orlando, FL; sister Hunter Lynch; sister-in-law Roberta Klein, San Diego, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Darlene’s memory can be made to the AKC Humane Fund
(https://akchumanefund.org/) or the American Heart Association (https://www.heart.org/). Friends may call from 3-4 pm on Sunday, October 29th at Bangs Funeral Home, 209 W. Green Street, Ithaca, NY. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 30th at 11 am at the Funeral Home with Steve Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Cemetery.

Jo Ann Mulcahy (Porter)

Birth Date: 1943-12-24
Graduation year: 1962
Deceased Date: 2023-04-15
Obituary:
JoAnn Porter Mulcahy
December 24, 1943 - April 15, 2023

Jo Ann P. Mulcahy passed away on April 15, 2023. She was born on December 24, 1943, at the US Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA, to John and Kathleen Porter, as John awaited deployment as a US Navy Pilot in World War II. John and Kathleen would go on to have five more children: Jim (Liz) Porter, Patricia (Chauncey) Johnstone, Paula (Don) Patrick, Mary Lee, and Peggy Charles. Jo Ann spent her childhood in Iowa surrounded by a large and loving extended family. At 16, her family relocated to Ithaca, NY, where she graduated from Ithaca High School in 1962. Following high school, Jo Ann proudly graduated from the Genesee Hospital School of Nursing in 1965 and loved working as a labor and delivery nurse. Jo Ann and her former spouse, Pat, met while in high school and married in 1966. After Pat returned from military service in Vietnam in the late 1960’s, they moved to St. Louis and together raised their four children. Though their relationship transitioned, Jo Ann and Pat remained good friends and excellent parents, connected in their commitment to the well-being of their children.

In 1993, as her children grew into adulthood, Jo Ann began to fulfill many of her own dreams and passions. She returned to rural Iowa where she had experienced so much happiness as a child. Throughout her life she demonstrated her ambition and gumption to succeed in reaching her goals, and her move to Iowa was no different. There she cleared the land herself to build her home and with the help of family and friends, she collected and carried 54 truckloads of fieldstone to create a custom oversized fireplace. In addition, she opened a weaving studio in town and worked with neighbors planting and harvesting fields of test crops.

Jo Ann would eventually move on from Iowa, heading west to Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. She designed and built several houses and worked as a ranch hand on cattle drives. Her lifelong love of horses and Western-style riding were common threads through many of her adventures. As much as she enjoyed taking part in the fine arts, she also loved hard work like mucking out stalls. Jo Ann was an extraordinarily gifted artist and craftsperson. Throughout her lifetime, her artistry was displayed in her beautiful hand woven pieces. She was particularly gifted in spinning and weaving and was a member of multiple fiber and weavers' guilds. She was a skilled and talented seamstress and knitter, often making her own clothing and period pieces used in her living history reenactments. In addition to making her own clothing, she enjoyed making her children matching outfits, knitting baby sweaters for loved ones (affectionately nicknamed the “Mulcahy straightjacket”), and knitting hats to donate to hospitals.

Jo Ann made service, philanthropy and generosity a constant priority in her life. Those values were the underpinnings of most everything she did. She shared herself, her knowledge, and her enthusiasm in thousands of hours of volunteering. She was a room mother, a dedicated Girl Scout leader, and worked with Habitat for Humanity around the country, including being a founding member of the Habitat chapter in Boone, Iowa. She was an excellent teacher and could often be found participating in living history events demonstrating life in the 1800’s. Many summers, she spent time with the American Youth Foundation at Camp Miniwanca teaching the arts to hundreds of young people.

Jo Ann’s financial generosity also positively impacted multitudes of people in immeasurable ways, often done quietly behind the scenes. Jo Ann consistently faced obstacles head on, never allowing for them to stop her in reaching any goal. Especially later in life, she experienced many health setbacks. After suffering a severe leg break, she proceeded to join an archeological dig while wearing a boot cast and using crutches so as not to miss out. Due to macular degeneration her vision suffered greatly, but that did not alter her lifestyle. She was resourceful in helping herself continue to live a good life and continued on great adventures around the world. If anything, her various health challenges gave her the wisdom to know she needed to embrace life while she had the ability. One of Jo Ann’s greatest traits was her love of people. She always had room for one more at her table. She was happiest in a room full of family and friends. She loved telling stories and countless evenings were spent full of laughter. She was known amongst her siblings for being the authority on all family memories. Family was of utmost importance to her and was her #1 value, but she did not define family as only those she was related to by blood; there was no limit. Her warm, welcoming spirit and kind disposition made everyone feel like they were her family.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her daughter Elizabeth Mulcahy Telthorst, her parents John and Kathleen Porter, her nephew Scott Porter and her brother-in-law Steve Charles. She is survived by her children, Michael (Lynn), Andrew (Molly), and Susan, her grandchildren Thatcher, Dalton, Sam, Allison, and Sean, her beloved siblings, many nieces and nephews on all sides of the family as well as innumerable friends whom she fiercely loved.
Services: A memorial will be held at Samuel United Church of Christ, 320 N. Forsyth Blvd., St. Louis, MO, 63105, on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 11 am, with a reception to follow. When we suggested he plan a new trip, this is really not what we had in mind.

Robert Spencer Garmise was born to Martha and Morris Garmise on October 1, 1944. He grew up in idyllic Ithaca, New York, playing baseball and sledding with the neighborhood boys, all while his little sister Carolyn tagged along. He reluctantly completed his Bar Mitzvah in 1957 because, in his words, “at least there were gifts.”

Bob cultivated a lifelong commitment to reading outrageously long and tedious books. When it was time for college, he attempted to major in everything. When they told him he couldn’t, he settled for a BS in History with a minor in English from the University of Wisconsin, graduate courses in Mathematics and English from Wayne State University, and an MA and PhD ABD in Computer Science from The Ohio State University. Someone must have finally told him he had to leave school and go get a real job.

He moved to Westerville, Ohio in the 1970s where he settled for the rest of his life. Much like Chandler Bing, no one was quite sure what Bob did for work. But it turns out that he was a Senior Research Scientist at Battelle Memorial Institute, a member of the technical staff at Bell Telephone Labs, a Requirements Analyst at The Columbus Dispatch and Vertex Systems, and a Consultant for Compuware, among other technical positions. To be honest, we still don’t really understand what Bob did for a living.

But more importantly, Bob joined the Columbus Ski Club. If you’ve ever talked to Bob, he’s probably tried to convince you to join the Ski Club. He was also, ironically, a man who didn’t ski. He traveled on numerous ski trips where he happily met up with friends at the lodge after they hit the slopes. He served as Ski Club President, softball and volleyball coach, board member, party planner, and group travel coordinator. To Bob, the answer to the ultimate question of life was both the number 42 and the Columbus Ski Club.

In fact, Bob swept his future bride off her feet at a Ski Club party where he smoothly opened with “I thought you’d be bigger.” Despite Terri not being the strong, powerhouse hitter of his coaching dreams, they fell in love and were married for 33 years. The secret to their successful union was her acceptance that nothing took priority over the annual Ski Club softball tournament. It might also have been their shared love of reading, backpacking, travel, football and Star Trek. She generously punted his love of historic literature and trips onto their daughter.

Bob was the happiest when he was talking about his three children. His overwhelming pride in them as blossoming individuals did not limit his frequent attempts to embarrass and sometimes exasperate them at every opportunity. When TJ didn’t keep up with Bob’s standards for room cleanliness, Bob felt the appropriate next step was to throw his bedsheets onto the front lawn. When Alex tried to sneak beer home in high school, Bob took great pleasure in pretending he hadn’t seen it and spending the entire evening “almost” opening the fridge door. When he taught Ashley how to drive and she backed into a parked car on day one, he also taught her how to fix a bumper so her Mom wouldn’t find out. His heart was in the right place as he taught them, in his own way, how to be responsible adults but never to take life too seriously. His only regret was that they didn’t all join the Ski Club.

Bob had a great sense of humor and loved making people laugh. Whether they liked it or not, no one who sat next to him on an airplane remained a stranger for long. The care package he sent to Carolyn’s freshman dormitory consisted of only mashed up crackers and peanut butter, with a note that read “I thought you might be hungry.” He authored the River Trace neighborhood newsletter, penning his comical take on suburban life. One Halloween, he dressed up as race car driver Bobby Rahal, and convinced his wife to be the race car. He espoused that his humor and happiness were due to his close friendships, and, “You know, that’s why everyone should join the Ski Club”.

Bob was quirky and wonderful. He had a passion for photography, taking great pleasure in boring family and friends with several hundred hours of living room slide shows. He loved country music, an obvious choice for a boy from a Jewish family in Upstate New York. He prided himself on being a nerd and was unapologetically true to himself. He collected stamps, t-shirts, matchbooks and other treasures we’ll continue to dig through for years. Why is there a tree branch in the attic, Bob? He didn’t believe in germ theory or green vegetables, but he definitely believed that elbows did not belong on the dinner table. He supported social programs he would never need himself because “That’s what makes us a civilized society. We have a responsibility to take care of each other.”

He is survived by his beloved wife, Terri Holland; sister, Carolyn Garmise (Steven Musher); sons TJ Gi and Alex Garmise (Andrea), daughter Ashley Patel (Nilesh), grandchildren Avra, Gigi, Autumn, and Oliver, and nephew Danny Musher (Meredith).

Bob hated funerals. So, in his honor, we won’t be having one. But we will be celebrating his life at the Old Bag of Nails in Westerville on Saturday, July 17th, 2021 with an open house from 4-8pm. As a man renowned for hitting singles in his long and storied softball career, he asked that his ashes be scattered somewhere he’s never been - third base.
In lieu of donations or flowers, please consider joining the Columbus Ski Club. Nothing would make Bob happier.

Deceased Date: 2021-04-06
Obituary:
Charles Indelicato

Ithaca - Charles Indelicato died of natural causes on April 6, 2021 with his long term partner, Sally, by his side. Born February 27, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of Salvatore and Hildegard Indelicato, most recently of Ithaca, NY. Charles graduated from Ithaca High School, class of 1962, and went on to Hotel School at Paul Smith College. He had a variety of related jobs for several years, and in the early 70s opened a record store with his great friend Charles (Chuckie) Wells. They named the store Eddy St. Records, being a stone's throw from the "Eddy Gate". This was an iconic time in Ithaca. Many Cornell students and local town musicians hung out at the record shop, buying, playing, and listening to music. One such Cornell student was Huey Lewis, who sat in the store for hours on end listening to music. The record shop sponsored a softball team which became known as the infamous Eddy St. Truckers.

Charles was a great lover of nature, and of being on the water. He had boats on Cayuga Lake and also in the Bahamas. He was a long time member of the Ithaca Sail and Power Squadron, and hosted many Power Squadron parties on the family beach. He was a businessman and landlord in town for many years.

Charles retired and moved to Florida in 2019 to enjoy the warmth and the water. He is survived by his partner, Sally Sauer, his daughter Heather Indelicato of Des Moines, Iowa, his siblings Bianca Indelicato and Pamela (Phil) Hutchings, and his nephews Gabe (and family) and Luke Hutchings.

Obituary:
Ronald David Schmal
May 19, 1944 - September 22, 2020

Fairfax County, VA - Ronald David Schmal, 76, of Fairfax County, Virginia, passed away on September 22, 2020, in Brandywine Senior Living at Alexandria.

Ron was born on May 19, 1944, in Ithaca N.Y. to Simon, a physician, and Grete (Schmidt), who fled Nazi Germany. He was a proud Cornellian '66 who earned a Ph.D. from The George Washington University in 1974. He married Marilyn Strauss on January 23, 1970, in Washington, D.C.

He drew immense fulfillment from his career as a Clinical Psychologist at Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services in Warrenton, Virginia for 45 years, retiring in August 2019 due to declining health. He was a congregant of Temple B'nai Shalom in Fairfax Station, where he led a Sunday School class on adolescent issues for 25 years.

In his beloved Mantua neighborhood, Ron was recognized for his warm laugh and jovial nature. He was a kind person, always loyal to the underdog: rescuing turtles on the road; collecting stamps from tiny Liechtenstein; enduring the heartbreaks of Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Browns fandom.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his children, Jesse (Becky), Robin, and Michael; his grandchildren, Caleb and Micah; his brother Steven (Deb); and his unruly dog, Willie.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Humane Society of Fairfax County, 4057 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA 22030, where Ron found joy volunteering in retirement.

Obituary:
Jerry Rychlyk, age 75, left this world to join his parents and older brother in Heaven on June 21, 2019. Born in Hamburg, Germany on March 8, 1944 to Julia and Wasyl Rychlyk, he immigrated to the United States at six years old, speaking no English.

His hobbies included golf, bowling, and spending time with his grandchildren, especially at Disneyland. He took his daughters to Disney every year when they were little and loved carrying on the tradition with his grandchildren. He was a rollercoaster enthusiast and was always thrilled to visit Six Flags. Jerry spent every Sunday of football season cheering on the Raiders and the Giants. He loved to go to Arizona State games with his daughters. A creature of habit at heart, he ate breakfast at the same Denny’s every morning for years. Jerry was a natural born supervisor. He loved to stand outside with a beer in his hand and “help” with any yard work or manual labor. He laughed hard and often and was loved by everyone around him.

Deceased Date: 2019-02-04
Obituary:
Herbert W Marsden
May 1, 1944 ~ February 4, 2019 (age 74)

Herbert W. Marsden, 74, of Silver City died of prostate cancer on Monday, February 4, 2019 at his home.

He was born in Syracuse, New York to Herbert W. Marsden, Sr. and Sarah (Hays Marsden) Lawson.  His sister Millie (Schmidt) and he and their mother and father lived in Ithaca NY.  After Herbie graduated from Ithaca High School, he left for Cambridge, Massachusetts to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  He worked at the Boston Sleep and Dream Lab as Expert-At-Large and there met his lifelong girlfriend, Gail Stanford.  Herbie spent most of his time as a child collecting electronic devices, TVs and radios, taking them apart and reassembling parts to function as a working item or sculpture, a skill he maintained throughout his life. He felt that living in a college town (Cornell University) and next to a factory (Morris Chain Factory) influenced him for the rest of his life. His life in Cambridge, MA was spent with his friends, The Wasted Lives For Peace. He became his political self there, attending anti-war demonstrations and learning about Marx and Engels and Communism and Socialism. He never lost his crusading energy for equality and opportunity for all people.

Herbie and Gail moved to San Lorenzo NM in 1972, and Silver City a few years later.  His energy helped create the Silver City Food Co-op, CATS TV, the Boston Hill Open Space, the San Vicente Trail System, and the Graffiti Festival.  He was a charter member of the Mimbres Hot Springs Ranch and a key participant in the killing of the ill-conceived Relief Route.  More recently he met weekly with several of his friends, the ANTS (Anarchist National Trail System), to maintain trails and pick up trash.  Herbie was an electrical contractor and worked as an electrician at Kennecott Copper (the Lazy K) Chino Mines at Santa Rita and was a Control Systems Repair Technician at the Ivanhoe Concentrator for Phelps Dodge.  He loved working with industrial-sized electricity and equipment.  His interests ranged broad and deep:  electronics, electricity, technology, building with mud, politics, industry, hiking, biking.  He built his own home, a free-form adobe inspired by the Catalonian architect Antonin Gaudí.  He and Gail travelled widely, not the least of which was exploring the small towns and vast emptiness of the Southwest.  Car camping in their van in out-of-the-way places was one of his favorite activities.

He loved deeply his wife Gail, son Billy, daughter-in-law Katherine, granddaughter Nava, and sister and brother-in-law Millie and Ron Schmidt; and partners-in-crime, Ed Ludwig and Frank Drysdale. In his later years he became a student at WNMU in the Art Department, taking some painting and many semesters of sculpture.  Because of his great love of the Art Department at WNMU, his memorial service will be held at Parotti Hall behind the Fine Arts Auditorium on Saturday, February 23rd from 2 to 5pm.  If you'd like, consider making a donation to the WNMU Foundation, PO Box 1158, Silver City NM 88062, with “In memory of Herbie Marsden” in the note section for an art scholarship.

The biggest joy of Sharron's life was her daughter Johanna, whom she cherished, and their love for each other was and remains boundless.
