KAREN KANE NICHOL

Karen Kane Nichol, age 58, of Ithaca. NY passed away Monday, October 28, 2002 at home following an extended illness.  Karen was born March 1, I944 in Buffalo, NY the daughter of Ruth Brosmer Kane and the late Robert J, Kane.

At the young age of 12, Karen was proud that she successfully swam across Cayuga Lake, not wanting to be shown up by older brother Kip who had already accomplished the task. Karen graduated from Ithaca High School in 1962 and continued her education at Tompkins Cortland Community College. She worked as a home health aide for many years, caring for others in need. As a mother, she instilled her sense of accomplishment in her daughters and encouraged them in the pursuit of their dreams, teaching them to be strong, independent women. Karen looked forward to visits from friends and family, especially her grandchildren and mother. She was known for her sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She enjoyed reading, writing, gardening, crafts, antiquing, had a love for animals and was a very talented artist. Karen will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her.

Karen is survived by her mother, Ruth of Ithaca; brother, Christopher “Kip” Kane of Phoenix. AZ; daughters, Tracey L. Austin (Bill) of Ithaca, and Jamie A. Weber (Harry) of Ithaca; her grandchildren, Zackery H. Weber, Shannon M. Weber and Jill M. Austin.

Her family would like to thank the many caregivers and support from Caregivers of Tompkins County, especially Judy Marion, who not only was her caregiver, but a friend; Jody Soroka, her respiratory therapist; and the nurses (especially on the 4th floor south) and respiratory therapists from Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca.

A memorial Mass will be held at Holy Cross Church, George Road in Dryden, NY on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Frank Lioi officiating. There are no calling hours. Private burial at Calvary Cemetery. Bangs Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations in Karen's memory be directed to Advocacy Center, attention: Annette Fuhr, PO Box 164, Ithaca, NY 14851.
