Detective Dies at 24
Joseph Wright Mace Jr., 24, of 1171 Dryden Rd., was dead on arrival at Tompkins County Hospital today, Feb. 12, 1969.
Mr. Mace, a detective with Cornell Safety Division since June 1968, was taken ill at his home. Death was from natural causes, according to Dr. Ralph Low, Tompkins County coroner.
He was a lifelong resident of Ithaca, was graduated in June 1962 from Ithaca High School. and in 1967 from Broome County Police Academy, has completed special courses at Alfred University and was currently enrolled in night classes at Auburn Community College.
Formerly a Tompkins County deputy sheriff, Mr. Mace became a special patrolman at Cornell in 1965 and was appointed as a regular on Feb 1, 1968. He was a member of the National Police Officers Assn., of Rescue Steamer Fire Company 2, and of St. Paul's Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Miles Mace; a son Joseph Wright Mace III; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W Mace St of Liverpool; four brothers Alan of Elmira, and David, Donald and Gary Mace, all of Liverpool; a sister, Mrs. Beverly Davis of Fulton; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Roe of Albany; an uncle, an aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul's Methodist Church. The Rev. Sheldon Stephenson will officiate.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Wagner Funeral Home. Members of Rescue Steamer Fire Company will meet at their rooms at 7 p.m. Thursday to go to the funeral home.
