JOAN MARIE HEAD

   Ithaca – Joan Marie Head, age 61 of 219 South Van Dorn Road, Ithaca, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse on Wednesday, April 21, 2004.

   Born July 19, 1942 to Lewis and Anna Marie Poelvoorde Van De Mark.  Joanie was the youngest of three children.  Her childhood years were spent living on Spencer St. in Ithaca, NY, where she was easily recognized for her long blond hair and special way of "whistling" at sailors.  Joanie attended the Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Ithaca High School in 1962.  During her teenage years, Joanie lived in a small house at the upper entrance of Robert H. Treman State Park where her father had taken a job as caretaker.  It was during those years that Joanie met George Head who would become her husband.

   George and Joanie were married on June 24th 1961 in Ithaca.  Together they began a small dairy farm in Enfield where they worked and raised their family.  Joanie was a devoted wife, caring mother and loving grandmother.  She held a special place in her heart for each and every one of her grandchildren.  She was a quiet champion in life and her heart was as wide as the ocean.  This was proven by the countless acts of kindness and deep compassion she showed to all who passed through her door.  Joanie will also be remembered by her co-workers and students in the Ithaca City school district where she worked in the cafeteria.  She retired in 2003.

   Over the years Joanie enjoyed many activities, including shuffleboard, darts, bowling, scrabble and relaxing with friends at the local taverns.  Some favorite pastimes were fishing at the pond in the backyard and providing her grandchildren with plenty of hugs and kisses.

   In death Joanie joins here mother who passed away in 1953 and her father who passed away in 1991.  She is survived by her devoted husband 0f 42 years, George V.P. Head; four children and seven grandchildren.  Carl Head and his son Patrick of Enfield, Lee Head, wife Melissa and their children Joshua, Jeremy, Marta and Noah of Trumansburg,  Don Head of Enfield, Renee Preston, husband Ron and their children, Alex and Sydney of Trumansburg.  She also leaves behind her brother, Raymond L. Van De Mark, his wife Yvonne of Enfield and sister, Myrtle Ann Linton of Enfield and their families.  Joanie will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

   The family will be present to receive their friends at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg on Saturday, April 24, 2004 from 3-6 p.m.

   A Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, April 25, 2004 at 2:00 p.m.  A reception at the VFW Post 961 in Ithaca will immediately follow the service.
