1944-12-23 2011-02-21Donald E. Barnett, a lifetime resident of Tompkins County (with the exception of a brief interlude in Charleston, S.C.), died on February 21, 2011. Donald was born in Ithaca in 1944. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Carol (LaBombard) Barnett; their daughter, Susan, and her husband, Greg; his brother, Roland, and his wife, Roberta; an uncle, Don Dawson; and several cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, Edward J. Barnett and Eudora (Dawson) Barnett. A veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, Donald was known for his gracious spirit and courtly manner; he was a devoted husband, father, son, and son-in-law who gave of his time freely. Noted for his sense of humor and way with words, Donald was an accomplished draftsman capable of producing complicated engineering diagrams and hilarious cartoons alike. He cherished books, radio programs, cars, and a succession of canine companions. A born musician, Donald played piano for residents at local nursing homes, most recently at Oak Hill Manor in Ithaca. A graveside service will be held at Kings Cemetery in Ithaca in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Mail-It Department, Finger Lakes Library System, 119 E. Green Street, Ithaca, NY 14850, as Donald took great pleasure in the books and music provided by their home delivery service.
