Miklos S. Lorand

Marital status: Married
Occupation: Retired
Cell phone number: none
Is it OK to tell other class members your e-mail and phone number?: yes
What have you been doing for the past 50 years?: Soon after graduation I moved to Collegetown. Changed my last name from Szerenyi to Lorand. Knocked around Ithaca,
taking classes at Cornell and Ithaca Collge.
Hung out at Willard Sraight, shooting pool & living a bohemian lifestyle, it was the 60's! Worked at Statler Hall's Rathskeller,
learned to cook and help run the Sunday smorgasboard in the main dining room.
1965 - Moved to Angola, IN, to attend Tri-State College, (now Trine Univ.) where my Stepfather ran the library.
1966 Summer, worked at a northwoods Wisconsin resort as the Chef Garde Manger or Pantry Chef, under a tempermental
Executive Chef. Anyone who's interested in living 10 years in 3 summer months HAS to work in a resort. This was the real
"Dirty Dancing" movie, way ahead of its time! Decided in September after sleeping for 48 hours straight, that the
food/hospitality industry was not for me. I found it greedy & definitely racist!
1967 - 69, Married classmate Susan Stiles, divorced two years later. Got my BSBA, worked on Eugene McCarthy's Presidential campaign,
was hired by Xerox Human Resources Dept., Rochester, NY, as a foreman then as a Product Knowledge Trainer with the Color Copier.
Received an Occupational Deferment from the Ithaca draft board.
1972 - Worked on George McGovern's Presidental campaign.
1974 - Moved to Eastern Illinois University, where Stepfather ran the library system. Became engaged
to Majorie J. Booth, of Northbrook, IL.
1975 - Received my MBA, moved to Milwaukee and worked for a national production efficiency consulting firm, traveling
throughout the midwest & east coast.
1976 - Married Marj, honeymooned on Harbour Island, Bahamas, (got the tropical warm weather bug) moved back to Charleston IL,
so she may finish her Master of Speech Pathology & Audiology degree.
1977 - With both of our Master's Degrees we moved to the Madison, WI area, she working in shools and me with the State of Wisconsin
in various Human resources specialist & manager positions. We enjoyed Wisconsin with snow & water skiing, primitive camping,
kayaking, and fishing.
1983 - Resigned from the State, to begin my own consulting business installing Human Resources policies and systems
for local governments. By this time we were into dog showing with our Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers.
1985 - With another couple, we spent Christmas and New Year's in Belize, Central America, good times!
1986 - Had enough of 30 degrees below zero weather in the "frozen North," relocated to St. Petersburg, FL, as the Human Resources
Director of a non-profit, serving the elderly. Marj working in the St. Petersburg Schools and receiving her second
Master's Degree in Educational Leadership.
1998 - Tired of Human Resources' never ending problems, I began a new career as an Antique Dealer. Florida is the perfect place
for flea markets, garage sales and estate sales, as it's God's Waiting Room full of retirees who move down with all their prized junk
from Up North, that their heirs gladly sell. I had spaces in at least 4 antique malls and sold the "good stuff" on eBay.
In the meanwhile, Marj and I began traveling and got the "cruise" bug. Our first cruise was in 1989, been traveling since.
In 1992 we purchased a house on Boca Ciega Bay just off the Gulf of Mexico, which we remodeled in 2006.
We have cruised & traveled all over the Caribbean, England, Denmark, Norway, Central Europe, Iceland, Greenland,
Alaska, Hawaii, the Canadien Maritimes, the U.S. West Coast , Vancouver, Victoria,
fished for salmon off Vancouver Island, traveled on trains in Canada, cruised to French Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia,
saw the Grand Canyon, rode horses in Monument Valley, tasted wine in California's wine country, etc., etc.
I retired in 2009, Marj in 2013. We both are cancer survivors. Celebrated our 45th anniversary in 2021.
We also came to the conclusion that cruise ships are floating petri dishes, so we are done with that part of our lives,
especially, since The Pandemic. We are vaccinated!
If this lets up, we'll be in Tuscany and France in 2022.

Mary Ludden (Schlater)

What have you been doing for the past 50 years?: After graduation, I went to Nursing school in Rochester. From there I went on to work in Boston and San Francisco before getting married to Ken Ludden who at that time was teaching for U of Md on overseas military bases. That allowed us to live in Iceland, Bermuda, Turkey, Germany and England before landing in the Wash. DC area in 1973. Ken went on to work on Capital Hill primarily in legislative affairs dealing with many foreign assistance issues. Here we raised three girls, I was widowd in 2001 and I continue to work as a nurse at Georgetown Hospital. One of these days I will retire but not yet.
