What have you been doing for the past 50 years?:
2017 has brought us out of our fourth winter in western Montana. We have traded the rolling swells of the Pacific Ocean near San Diego for the magnificent Mission Mountains of the Continental Divide. We designed and built a little country home near St.Ignatius, just south of Flathead Lake. It is in the Amish style as we are in the heart of Amish country; much of the land here is either farmed or ranched. A neighboring dairy farmer takes care of our field and we harvest a bit over 400 tons of alfalfa in a 4 month summer season. There is an abundance of wildlife here. We have 40 wolves in the valley, at times we have Grizzly bears in our field and there are elk most evenings, jumping the fence up near the canal to feed on the grasses there. We had a cougar come down the length of the garage last winter and fox & coyote hunt the field for moles, voles and mice. There is a great variety of bird life; we have 15 different varieties of owl alone. There are three eagles if you count the Osprey as a fishing eagle; a dozen hawks as well as Falcons, Kestrels, Vultures, Kites, Pheasants and, our personal favorite, the Hungarian or Grey Partridge. Springtime brings a host of ducks of various sorts and colors. We had only moderate success with our garden this year but the deer loved it. We have planted a dozen fruit trees, some coniferous and a host of flowering plants. There is a rock wall between our field and the one to the south and I have been reclaiming it, just for fun. We enjoy our many guests and often have a bonfire after dark that burns well into the night. Gretchen is still writing grants for her non-profit group which originated in San Diego. She is a fabulous cook and a great sport. She swims three times a week at the Aquatic Club, she has a great circle of friends and keeps our appointment calendar almost full. Our events these day include Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Friends of the Indian Museum and the Audubon Society. We are discovering Montana by following the trails of Lewis & Clark through the area. There is a "Blue Ribbon" trout stream just the other side of the National Bison Range and I have brought home the essentials for Rainbow trout tacos many times. I am a bow hunter but have had only marginal luck with the elk population this season. I am giving serious consideration to switching back to the camera; at least it wouldn't be so clumsy and anything I shot wouldn't have to be packed out. I have a couple buddies that I ski with through the winter up near Glacier Park. We enjoy some favorite Public Broadcasting shows and still spend most evenings with a good book. We enjoy the peace and quiet and celebrate a small flock of Trumpeter swans against the mountains or a storm rolling in from the west. We call our place "the Lucky Dog Ranch" and think of ourselves as the lucky dogs. We love company and any of you that may be heading this way (Glacier Park, Banff, Calgary & Jasper are just up the road), we have plenty of room in "the Bunkhouse". Bring your binoculars, a camera and be prepared to be dazzled. See you soon. |
